When you look back in history, it is not until the most recent century when people generally started to think that dogs could not survive without eating packaged commercial dog food. Some of these people believe it is better for the dog to be fed only packaged foods and that it can be harmful to feed dogs the scraps from our own meals.
What these people forget is that over thousands of years, dogs have learned to live on the scraps we humans feed them, and their digestive systems have adapted to these feeding habits.
Some dog owners are concerned about the many added preservatives now found in commercially produced wet and dry dog food. In fact, this makes sense when you consider how many families would be happy eating canned food and fast food every day of the week. Why then do we allow dogs to eat this way?
A valid point and something you should consider is that many vets are now attributing some of the current pet illnesses to the particularly highly concentrated form of processed foods that we feed our dogs.
Even though there are a few pet food companies who do prepare decent nutritional meals for your dogs, the majority of companies will only produce low quality foods that make them a profit, disregarding the health of your animals.
When you look at the animals we find on earth, you will not find one that has a natural diet of cooked food. Animals don’t cook, and if they do, they certainly don’t clean up the kitchen extraordinarily well. This is the reason that even in our homes we continue to feed our dog raw foods processed into the cans.
These are mostly vet-approved, and require the manufacturer to use only human grade food components. Making your own recipes for dog food is a brilliant idea, with many options available.
Dogs, like humans, prefer variety in their diet, so this is one way of ensuring they get it. You can make sure they get their dose of fats and oil, and you can control the levels of sugar and other nasty ingredients.
To replace added sugar in food, try using some honey or molasses as an alternative.
Aside from the knowledge that your pet is receiving all of the nutrients that they need, you are also able to fully monitor their food intake. This makes a lot of sense when you consider that pet food companies are entitled by law to change their recipes as much as fifteen percent, without having to notify people via their labeling.
You may already be aware that many of the dog food products on the market will present labels with various forms of the one ingredient listed. This is not satisfactory because you are not able to see the true picture of what is in the food. It could be much more wheat than meat, and dogs as we know are not meant to eat wheat products.
This labeling technique is not illegal, but many people consider it to be misleading at the very best.
Once you get started and into the routine of preparing your recipes for dog food meals from scratch, you will see that it can actually be fun.
You can also feel assured that your dog loves you for it, and for the variety, and this is what is most beneficial. You can even start experimenting with different types of dog food to get the best meals you can.
Much the same way you would experiment with meals for your kids, your dog needs the same attention from you.
