There is a lot of English information on the suitability of chihuahuas as pets which states that they are pretty much terrible with children. Does this information hold true in Mexico, where the dogs originated? What are popular breeds of dogs among Mexican families? Thanks!

To clarify, I’m not interested in whether the dogs’ behavior is tempermentally different – of course it isn’t. I’m more interested in society’s reception to the dogs.
I think you mean variations of the breed? No. A chihuahua is a chihuahua.
The most popular dogs with mexican families are mutts.
Yup.
Mutts.
I went to mexico and i saw people selling dogs and they were saying they were maltese but they turned out to be a chihuahua lab mix.
Growing up that’s all I saw as well.
Stray mutts and people walking their mutts.

Chihuahuas are VERY popular in mexico its the national dog! They arent mean to children because I have 4 chihuahuas and ones pregnant and my neighbors get along great with them the most they’ve ever done to show negative behavior is bark at someone. In Mexico Chihuahua means devil dog. I thinks its rude, every dog should be treated and called nice names.

they were either originated in Spain or Mexico. They used to be very popular in Mexico and spain but now the population of chihuahuas in Mexico and spain has gone down more that 45%.
