Dog Bark Collars – 3 Common Types of Bark Collars

A barking dog can be a nuisance not only to his owner, but to neighbors as well. In this article, we’ll look at the three most common types of dog bark collars, shock collars, citronella and ultrasonic bark control. Each type operates differently, and the effectiveness of each varies, as well.

The first type of bark control is the shock bark collar. A shock collar works by delivering a static electricity shock to your dog in response to his barking. The collar may detect barking through the use of a microphone or by sensing vibration in the dog’s throat. Some collars use a combination of both sensors. The static shock your dog receives will deter his barking. Bark shock collars are normally very effective, with some dogs responding the first day of use.

The second type of bark collar is the citronella collar. A citronella collar is similar to the shock collar, but instead of a shock, the collar delivers a harmless spray of citronella in his snout every time he barks. The citronella collars have a microphone that picks up the sound of barking. Citronella collars can be very effective, particularly with timid or shy dogs, and in cases where a shock collar is too extreme.

The last type of bark control is ultrasonic bark control. The ultrasonic collar also uses a microphone to sense your dog’s barking. When your dog barks, the collar is activated and gives off a high-pitched ultrasonic tone. The tone can’t be heard by humans, but can be heard by your dog and is annoying enough to deter barking in many dogs. In my experience, the ultrasonic collars aren’t quite as effective as the aforementioned collars. This is particularly true with persistent barkers.

In this article, we’ve gone over the most common types of dog bark collars: shock, citronella and ultrasonic. Which type you choose will depend on many things including your personal preference, your dog’s temperament, and how persistent and often the barking takes place.
