How Can I Get Started in Showing Dog. I Have Silky Terriers and Chihuahuas That Are APRI Reg.?

I have Two Silky Terriers and Two Chihuahuas that I want to start entering in dog shows. They are APRI Registration and I live in Texas.

You can show them in AKC performance events, like Obedience or Rally-O, by getting them an Indefinite Listing Privilege (ILP) number.

The dog must be spayed/neutered and appear to be purebred.

If you want to show in conformation (real shows, not the APRI ones), you need to have AKC registered dogs.

APRI is a scam registry. The only reputable registry in the US is the AKC. I am not even sure if APRI has shows – but you won’t be able to show in the AKC ones.

APRI is a scam registry primarily used by Puppy Mills and BYB’s.

They have their own "Shows" http://www.aprpets.org/main/dogshows.html?, but you will never be able to compete with your dogs in a AKC show.

yeah – thats not the best registry.

But, you can still show your dogs. Contact your local AKC Kennel club and start there. You can sign up for training classes and start on your way to some agility events. Then you have to apply for an AKC Limited Registration for your dogs and someone at the Kennel club will probably have to sponsor you.

I wanted to show my dog, but his breed isn’t AKC recognized. A UKC club just started in my area- but I’ve decided my knucklehead just isn’t an agility dog.

Good luck and have fun with your dog!

Why don’t you go to an AKC show and check it out? akc.org has lists of shows near you.

Talk to the people who are showing the breeds you like – AFTER they’ve been in the ring is best. Collect business cards, look for a mentor. Watch the dogs in the ring – if you’re serious, you’ll need to develop an "eye". Try to figure out what the judge likes and dislikes about the dogs that win or don’t win. Look for similarities in the winning dogs in each class.

Some of the clubs are now offering tours at the shows for people new to dog shows – take you around and explain what’s going on, how it works. Also, the superintendent’s table will have a brochure for those new to shows.
