I am planning a trip to San Diego and I am taking my 2 Chihuahuas with me. I want to give them something to calm them down so they can sleep on the way there. Any suggestions?
You can give your dogs meds to calm them down. BUT you need to call your vet (or any vet) and tell them the size of your dog. If your dogs are under 5 lbs they only need the slightest bit of meds.
You can give them benadryl, but it can do the same thing to dogs as it does to children or adults. It can make them more hyper than calm. So you should also practice it before you go.
Call the vet. If the benadryl doesn’t work, there is a drug called acepromozine (known as ace) that is a sedative and pretty cheap, but it must be prescribed.
Good luck!

Please call your vet. Tranquilisers may be contra-indicated.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to sedate your dogs, unless your vet has given you something for an anxiety problem (like traveling) that would require sedation.

the best pill is one prescribed by your vet.. so my suggestion is to talk to the vet.
Honestly you’d be better to get them used to riding in their crate. ALL drugs have side effects, and you dont know how your dogs will react. Unless your dogs tend to be very nervous dogs, then I dont really advice any sedatives or tranquilizers.

Before you think about tranquilizing the dogs, have you contacted the airlines to make sure you have all the paperwork you need to transport the dogs there? Airlines are becoming much more strict about flying pets. The dogs must be up to date on all their vaccines and you must have a health certificate from your vet for each dog. You also need to check California laws. They may require a yearly rabies vaccine even though your dogs get the 3 year vaccine and it may be current.
This all should be taken care of at least 60 days before you are scheduled to leave.
I can’t tell you how many clients I fielded calls from in a panic because they needed health certificates and vaccinations before flying. And most states want the vaccines done at least 14 days before the trip. That gives the vaccines time to reach full potency in the pet.
